Declaration of Independence from HOMEWORK!!

Declaration of Independence from Homework
November 3, 2008

Preamble
To our principal Mrs. Pittioni,
As students at Sherwood Middle School, we believe the vast amounts of homework given to us during the school year are far too much. We often feel that we do not have time to finish the homework, have absolutely no free time, and don’t have opportunities for other, good, positive activities. Homework definitely seems to take over our lives.

Declaration of Natural Rights
We feel that as ordinary teenagers we deserve the freedom to be a kid. Never at any time should homework keep us from having the fun that we should have at our age and have the chance to enjoy our lives. We should inherit the freedom to have more class time to work on and finish our assignments so that we can learn what we can in school, and have our fun out of school.

Grievances
We are often times taken advantage of and given homework beyond our capacity. The homework we are given is much more work than is required for us to do to actually understand the topics we are learning. Even school teachers would agree that the late nights required to complete assignments are not good for our health or for our education. Our lives simply become too complex as we try to mix our teen life with school work, even after school.

Resolution
Looking at all that we have learned and have the ability to learn, we feel that it is our right and privilege to declare independence from the enormous amounts of homework that the school showers us with every day. We, as SMS students, are willing to put forth and extra effort in our classes to learn the appropriate amount of information needed. If the amount of homework is reasonably lowered and we are given the proper time in class, we will works exceptionally hard to learn and do as much work as possible during school hours.
